Welcome! I'm Sarah Mei (formerly Wustner), based in San Francisco, California, in the United States.
This is my homepage.
What I'm up to these days: I'm a senior software engineer at LookSmart, working on their 3-year-old (!) Rails application.
Like everyone else in the universe, I guess, I have a blog. In addition, I'm a member of Devchix, an online community of women developers. I occasionally blog there on techie topics. I'm also on Twitter if you really want the blow-by-blow.
I've been thinking about how to get more women and girls interesting in programming, and how to retain the ones we already have. I've started a somewhat utilitarian blog to collect my thoughts on that topic. (Given the chaos that generally reigns in my house, this hasn't been updated in some time, but I still welcome your comments and feedback.)
I'm also interested in technology and its relation to developing countries. I was one of the six original Geekcorps pilot volunteers, and that experience changed, and hopefully deepened, my understanding of global economics and the politics of aid. I've been looking for a way to incorporate this interest back in to my professional life. Perhaps now is the time. :)
Previously: I spent 6 years doing traditional Java and J2EE software development before setting out for uncharted waters in 2003, first as an e-commerce site owner, and later as a technology consultant. In recent years I have returned to software, my first love. View my full resume.
Non-Work-Related: My husband is also a software developer and we live with our two kids (the older 3 years, the younger 3 months) in San Francisco. I love programming, and I'm lucky to have a job that pays for child care.
I'm a gamer - mostly puzzle games, but recently I've been enjoying Civ IV (which is, incidentally, my greatest incentive to learn Python). I've been taking Japanese classes off and on at Soko Gakuen, a language school at a Buddhist monastery. Currently I'm off, due to our recent family addition.
Further updates as events warrant!
